5.00?! Yes, that’s right, 5am. The reason? Sunrise. Professional and other serious photographers shoot predominantly at a time known as the ‘Golden Hour’ which is the first and last hour of sunlight. This is a time when the most atmospheric pictures are created, where the rising sun casts long shadows over the landscape burning through the dawn mist, revealing texture and adding warmth to a an otherwise cool dawn. Our location, Hothfield Heathlands in Kent, the county’s largest area of acid heathland, lying 3 miles north west of Ashford. The date has been chosen to coincide with the spectacular flowering of the heather.
This 3 hour landscape photography workshop in Mid Kent is suitable for absolute beginners as well as the more advanced photographer. With such a small group size I can easily move between you advising and answering any questions you may have on a one-to-one basis. You also have the freedom to position yourself where you like and not worry too much about other photographers being in your way.
I will go through my thought process when seeking a composition and the decisions I make when choosing the right lens along with using filters, obtaining the correct exposure and assessing the camera’s histogram.
Meeting at the car park 40 minutes before sunrise gives us plenty of time to be in position and, quite simply, enjoy the day unfold at this wonderful time when most others are tucked up in bed! Aside from landscapes, there will be the opportunity to shoot the carnivorous sundew and possibly highland cattle and Konik ponies that graze the birch and bracken, thereby saving and restoring this heathland expanse.
