Winter is without doubt the best season to photograph the wonderful birdlife that can be found at Arundel WWT Centre in West Sussex and is one of Southern England's premier locations for getting amazing close-ups of wildfowl and swans.
At this time of the year, bird numbers swell and the light at this time is absolutely ideal for photographers as the sun is always low in the sky, revealing textures and enhancing the colours of the wildfowl.
Many of the birds are so obliging they hardly take any notice of you as they swim, preen and wing-stretch enabling you to record many different aspects of behaviour without the need of hides and long waits! You also have the possibility of getting right down to the water's level giving you that fantastic low-angle viewpoint.
I have been here many times and I can tell you, the photographic possibilities are endless. Indeed, an image I took there 2 winters ago appeared on the front cover of Birdwatch magazine.
The day will be a combination of classroom presentations and in-the-field photography where I will discuss such things as exposure, iso, white balance, focusing modes, using flash, reading the histogram, viewpoint and composition. I will also tackle the thought process behind my images and I am certain that, as the day concludes, you not only have a much clearer understanding of your camera's controls but leave full of inspiration and keen to put into practice the many ideas, hints and tips that I have given you.
