Photographic Workshops > Yorkshire Dales in Autumn
Wednesday 30th October 2019 - Saturday 2nd November 2019
The landscape of the Yorkshire Dales is as picturesque as it gets when it comes to English scenery. There is so much to photograph and on this 5-day workshop we will capture much of what this beautiful region has to offer.
Although I have visited, often, in early summer this will be my first trip to this region in Autumn. This should make no difference whatsoever since I know the locations and with more than 30 years experience in photographing the natural world, it's easy to envisage what the landscape will look like at this time. With a combination of beech, birch and oak, we are sure to encounter some wonderful colour, especially around the waterfalls. Speaking of which, that's another advantage with holding the workshop at this time. The water level of rivers and streams are likely to be significantly higher, thereby resulting in more exciting waterfalls.
Weather permitting, we will venture out at dawn making the most of the early morning sunlight. Stone barns feature heavily in the landscape and there will be plenty of opportunities to capture these, both from a distance and close-up. While photographing a myriad of waterfalls we will experiment with long exposures and late in the afternoon, through till dusk, we will photograph lone trees on limestone pavements. Aside from recording the ‘bigger picture’ we will look out for patterns and details both in the landscape and at our feet!
As with all my workshops, the group size is small and especially so on this one where with just 3 of you, you will have the choice of the best positions without others being in your way. It also means I can spend quality time with each of you and since we all travel as one it makes for a very friendly group dynamic.
Throughout the workshop, we will be staying in a very comfortable hotel in the picturesque region of Wensleydale. Our base has been chosen so we are never too far away from a photogenic location.
The following will give you an idea as to the workshop’s daily format, though this is subject to change due to weather conditions.

“This was my first significant visit to the Yorkshires Dales and I could not be more pleased with the trip. The scenery was outstanding with rolling open countryside, bleak limestone pavements and spectacular waterfalls. Rob’s organisation was, as it always is, perfect. His knowledge of the area allowed him to pick and choose the locations that were best suited to the expected weather conditions and we were lucky enough to have very varied weather during the trip. Even being accidently locked out of our hotel at 7am was turned to our advantage by revisiting a nearby waterfall swollen by the previous night’s rains. The guidance given by Rob both ‘in the field’ and processing images back at the hotel was invaluable. I have been on several trips with Rob now and never fail to learn something new”.

A tripod will be essential for those dawn/dusk shoots, and polarising and neutral-density grads, useful. It is essential that you have a clear understanding of exposure. A full checklist will be given nearer the workshop date. As in the main text, Lee Filters have donated a full complement of filters that you are welcome to use.
