Photographic Tours > Spectacular Senja: Auroras, Mountains and Fjords

Monday 16th September 2019 - Saturday 21st September 2019

Upon booking of this tour you will receive a free copy of Robert's ebook: Autumn in Finnish Lapland which includes a comprehensive 'how to' section on photographing the northern lights. Click here for a preview of the book.

Payment plan
Norway is a relatively expensive country to visit and appreciating this tour might be out of reach for some, while at the same time not wishing to make it 'exclusive', I am very happy to offer a monthly payment plan. Please contact Robert to discuss this.

Please allow +/- 3 days until flights have been confirmed.

Introduction
As Norway’s second largest island, Senja is the more compact, wilder and less visited neighbour of the famous Lofoten islands and mid-September is the perfect time to visit, with sheer-sided mountains and valleys cloaked in the vibrant yellow of silver birch. With a mild climate and the prospect of witnessing the northern lights, Senja is a must destination for anyone wishing to experience nature at its most bewildering beauty.

Our driver
With overseas tours requiring a minibus, I don’t do the driving! I take care of the day to day running and dictate where we go, when we eat and what we photograph. This takes up enough energy without doing all the ferrying around, too! Those of you that have attended tours in Lapland and Iceland will already be familiar with Dirk. Well, I’m pleased to say that I will be, once again, employing his services as the driver and chief wilderness cook and fire-starter extraordinaire! So, be prepared for fire-side suppers and hot drinks while photographing amidst some of Europes most breathtaking scenery.

Group size
As with all my workshops, the group size will be relatively small ensuring plenty of 'personal space' in which to work and as much individual tuition as you would like or need. It also means that since we will all be travelling as one, it makes for an extremely friendly group dynamic.

Northern lights
Understanding that the northern lights are high on many’s wish-list we will do our utmost to put you in the best possible position to photograph them. Infact, due to Senja’s northerly latitude, your chances of seeing them here are more likely than in Lofoten! Fortunately, within a 10-minute drive, I know of several locations offering exciting compositional opportunities.

Click here to watch the northern lights timelapse I produced featuring a location we will be visiting.

Daily schedule
Below will give you an idea as to the daily schedule, though this is subject to change due to conditions and possible late night northern lights photography.

Sunrise: 06.45
Sunset: 18.45

Day 1
Arrive Tromso airport 15.40 hrs. Transfer to our accommodation, a drive of approximately 4 hours. Evening meal. Possible northern lights photography.

Days 2 to 5
05.30 – 08.30: Sunrise shoot.
08.30 – 09.30: Breakfast
09.30 – 11.30: Rest / free time.
11.30 – 13.30: Nearby photo-excursion. You are welcome to stay in the hotel and wander around the surrounding area should you so wish.
14.00 – 15.00: Meal.
16.00 onwards. On location photographing towering mountains, fjords, bays, sandy beaches, colourful forests and unending views. Return time dictated by whether there are clear skies. If there are, then expect to stay out until at least midnight. Our following day’s activities will reflect this and if we return very late there will not be a sunrise shoot and more rest time will be provided.

Day 6
Depart for the airport.

Image appraisal
Depending upon how much time (and energy!) we all have (this will be dependent on our northern lights activates) I shall endeavour to give at least one image appraisal - more likely on the penultimate day. As with all tours, the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day and less so on continual hands-on tuition which I give on my UK-based workshops. Be assured, however, that upon arriving at a location I will be giving suggestions on what and how to take the view and will, occasionally, move between you all checking on your progress and answering any questions you might have. I will, also, be giving a tutorial on northern lights photography to increase your chances of returning home with some truly memorable images.

Accommodation

Spectacular Senja: Auroras, Mountains and Fjords Photography Workshop

Our superb harbour-side accommodation reflects Scandinavian style with assured views of the harbour from each living room. Two persons sharing an apartment will each have an en-suite bedroom to themselves assuring complete privacy. You will share the adjoining lounge, come diner, which has stunning south-facing views across the bay. There is a fully equipped kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave, cooker and dishwasher should you wish to bring some food with you.

Each apartment houses 2 persons, each with an en-suite bedroom. One bedroom faces the bay and the other the rear of the apartment building. Priority for the bay-view goes to whoever books first. However, it's only a small window and somewhere to lay your head so you're not exactly missing out as you'll have shared access to the adjoining living room.

Depending on the male/female ratio I shall endeavour to put same-sex couples in the same apartment. However, this cannot always be guaranteed and it would be wise to alert me upon booking should you have any concerns about sharing the same apartment with a member of the opposite sex.

Testimonials

"The trip exceeded my expectations. Rob is a master of planning. He timed the trip to perfection, ensuring that it coincided with the vibrant golden colours of the silver birch leaves and the deep red berries and leaves of the bilberry and lingonberry. The colours were stunning in the old forests. He also planned each day carefully and skillfully to ensure that we explored the beautiful island of Senja in its best light.
Rob was proactive in providing both creative and camera input and was always on hand to give advice and ideas. Sometimes it can be a struggle (for me at least!) to 'compose' but Rob has an excellent eye for composition and gave inspiration when needed. A highlight - and it always has to be regarded as a bonus - was the opportunity to photograph the Northern Lights. Rob made sure that we were ready (in terms of our camera settings, and in the right location at the right time) to capture the glorious displays. The accommodation overlooked a beautiful fjord and was very comfortable; the quality of the food was superb! All in all, it was a great trip with a great photographer. Thank you Rob!

"Robert Canis' trip to the island of Senja on the NW coast of Norway proved to be an exceptional area for landscape photography. Deep fjords and jagged, rocky peninsulas proved to be spectacular subjects when lit by rapidly changing light. The small settlements and tiny fishing ports proved to be the only places of human activity that emphasised the massive scale of the landscape.  Our excellent driver Dirk  could prepare an excellent lunch over a log fire seemingly at a moments notice at some truly picturesque locations. The accommodation based around a tiny fishing port provided exceptional levels of comfort and the meals were memorable and able to suit all tastes. Needless to say, Robert used his prior knowledge of this beautiful area to direct us to spectacular locations and was always on hand to offer advice and support for all our photographic needs. This was a splendid trip which I would gladly do again at some point in the future".
Nick Nicholas

‘Senja has everything - mountains, fjords, beaches, glorious autumn colours, waterfalls, sunsets, northern lights and ever-changing weather giving dramatic skyscapes. As always, Rob always seems to know the best place for the weather and light conditions. There is certainly something for everyone on this trip. The accommodation is fantastic and is perched on the edge of a fjord giving stunning views. Dirk’s campfire lunches are the icing on the cake - the best blueberry pancakes ever! Plenty of time is given at each location and Rob always seems to know when you need some help with photography and when you need to be alone. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and have come home with some great images and even better memories.'

"Wow Rob, you've found another gem of a location; mountains, waterfalls, dramatic  coastlines and all without any crowds or photographers. This is the place to come for genuinely new pictures that will not have been seen before. Our hotel and rooms were great and the food excellent. Can't wait to return! Many thanks for putting together another great tour - and with a great bunch of people.

‘’Senja is a relatively undiscovered gem. Such a beautiful part of North West Norway and at times it felt like we have it to ourselves. The trip was brilliantly orchestrated by Robert who ensured we have some very special experiences...day and night! Always on hand to give thoughtful advice and to help us do justice to the amazing landscapes with the photographs we took. Found myself trying new things...and that’s exciting!
Highly recommended. An exhilarating wee with a talented guide and photographer...a really nice guy too”!

Payment plan: Please contact Robert to discuss this.
Group size: 6
Guides: Robert Canis and Dirk (driver)
Location: Senja, Norway
Cost includes: Full-board accommodation in en-suite rooms, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Transport throughout the duration of the tour.
Cost excludes: Flights, insurance, cafe stops, snacks and alcoholic drinks.
Flight: LHR - Tromso return with SAS airlines, circa £215.
Level of fitness: Low. Most of the sites we shall visit will be just a short walk from the minibus. Due to the nature of the island there will be times when walking on rocky, slippery ground beside fjords and lakes is required. There will be a single 20 minute ascent up a steep path to access a waterfall. The view more than makes up for it! if this sounds too much, then not to worry, there is an alternative trail you are welcome to take at the base of the hill following a stream through some colourful woodland. Plus, there is the fjord where we shall be parked so there'll be lots of alternative opportunities.
Experience level: Beginner upwards.
Equipment needed: 2-3 lenses will be sufficient which include a wide-angle and telephoto, in the region of 200-300mm. A fast (f/2.8) wide-angle (14mm on a full-frame camera) for the northern lights (worth hiring) and a macro lens will be useful. A tripod will be essential for those dawn/dusk/aurora shoots. Polarising, neutral density and neutral-density grads will, also, be required. It is essential that you have a clear understanding of exposure. A full checklist will be given nearer the workshop date.
