Leeds Castle

Often described as 'the loveliest castle in the world," Leeds Castle (which celebrated its 900 year anniversary in 2019) has been a Norman defence, the property of six medieval queens, and used by Henry VIII.

In 2017 I was searching for a new project to undertake. At the time I was leading workshops at Leeds Castle and while there, I would think about all the wildlife and scenes that could be photographed through the seasons.   

With meetings held and permission granted, from 2018 to 2021 I devoted as much time as I could to the project and spent countless hours wandering through the grounds, sitting beside the lakes at dawn photographing its birdlife and setting up remote cameras to capture the night sky above this beautiful castle while sleeping in my car. 

What would be the goal? At that moment in time, there wasn’t one. Perhaps, postcards, a calendar (which was duly printed for 2022) or even a book. To me, it wasn’t important for I was keen to simply get stuck into producing a new series in surroundings that although not entirely unfamiliar were, at the same time, relatively new.

Presently, I am researching the possibility of producing a book, and since I am keen not to make too many images public I apologise for the rather limited selection on show.
