B&W Film Prints

Within just two years of purchasing an SLR in the early 1980s, part of my bedroom was converted into a makeshift darkroom where many happy hours were spent producing black and white silver gelatin prints. My acceptance into Paddington College School of Photography in 87 enabled me to continue with this practice and, also, subsequently when working as a darkroom technician for a local commercial photographer in Kent. As digital cameras became more widely accepted in the late 90s and with my photography workshop business taking up more and more of my time, my darkroom work came to a grinding halt. And, such was the rapid advancement of the digital medium and technical advantages it provided to the wildlife photographer, up until four years ago, I had little desire to return. 

Through reentering the fascinating and hugely rewarding field of black and white film photography and having access to a nearby professional darkroom, I am excited to be, once again, producing fine art silver gelatin prints which, as and when time allows, will be made available to purchase. 

Archival permanence
Once the image has been printed, in order to increase its archival stability, I then put it through another traditional chemical process called selenium toning which although differing from one print to the next, often takes on a beautiful pale reddish-brown hue. Practised for close to a century; as a result of this process, the work of such luminaries as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and John Blakemore still looks as good today as they did when first printed all those years ago. Once signed and mounted within an acid-free matt, the print is then placed into a glass-clear, archival ‘pocket’.  

Artist proofs
Produced outside the limited edition, artist proof prints enable me to display them at shows, present as gifts and/or remain in my personal collection. These are unnumbered and designated as AP.

Open Editions
There is no question, that a personally hand-printed limited edition silver gelatin print is a unique piece of art. However, to enable others to also enjoy my images as prints, I have decided to make them available as open edition Giclée produced from the scanned negative. To facilitate handling and framing, the image will be surrounded by a white border and although signed, the print comes unnumbered, unmounted and without a certificate of authenticity.
