Elmley: First Light to Last takes you through a single day on the marsh, woven with the colours, moods and rhythms of all four seasons. More than a record of its wildlife and landscapes, the book explores the emotional connection I’ve developed with this extraordinary place over more than three decades.
Through changing weather, shifting tides, and the ebb and flow of the seasons, I hope to convey not only the character of Elmley, but the sense of wonder, peace, and belonging that draws me back time and time again.
Woven throughout the book are quotes and passages from both well-known and lesser-known authors and poets, alongside my own thoughts and experiences. Behind-the-scenes photography case studies and a large map of Elmley further reveal the making of the work.

Elmley has given me far more than photographs. As a small way of giving something back, 5% of profits from every copy sold will go to the Elmley Nature Reserve Community Interest Company - a not‑for‑profit organisation that looks after day‑visitor access to the Reserve. Run voluntarily, with minimal administrative and communication costs, every penny goes directly towards maintaining public access and supporting nature projects.
“Elmley is a book of ravishing landscape pictures capturing the spirit of this beautiful place; just wallow in the misty scenes, admire the waders, wildfowl and raptors flying against varied backgrounds of angry clouds, distant views of grazing cattle, dew laden vegetation and isolated distant buildings bathed in the warm twilight sun. Robert clearly loves the place, and over the years he has evolved into an exceptional nature photographer.”
— Stephen Dalton
The book opens with a foreword by world-renowned pioneering nature photographer Stephen Dalton, setting the tone for the journey ahead, and concludes with a thoughtful afterword by Elmley founder and owner Philip Merricks MBE, offering his perspective on the reserve’s significance, its ongoing conservation, and its future.
Edited and designed by Keith Wilson and Eddie Ephraums - two of the publishing industry’s most respected figures - and created in close collaboration with me, this book is the result of thousands of hours of work and tens of thousands of transparencies and digital files.
The result is a single volume that stands as a personal record of a decades-long relationship with this remarkable nature reserve. When I am long gone, I hope it will show not only what this place has meant to me - and to so many others - but also why this unique landscape is worthy of being treasured and preserved.
This, my friends, is my love letter to Elmley.
Due to overseas tour commitments, orders will take between two and three weeks to fulfil.
"This is a beautiful and striking testament to the power of revisiting the same location time and time again. Becoming at one with the landscape and its inhabitants really is the best way to intuitively know when a good photographic opportunity is about to arise.
The book has been edited by former AP editor Keith Wilson, also very well known for his work with Wildlife Photographer of the Year and designed by Eddie Ephraums - a highly distinguished name in publishing. Stephen Dalton, the pioneering wildlife photographer and author, has written the foreword. The cast assembled to produce this book is nothing short of stellar, and the results speak for themselves.
Hugely recommended, the book itself is as beautiful as the gorgeous photography within."

"For those of us weaned on bucket lists and destination photography, there's something almost contrary about a book built from one location. Canis didn't need a new continent to find new pictures; he needed to keep showing up to the same gate, the same fenceline, the same stretch of water, until the marsh gave something up that it hadn't offered before.
The images here bear that out. Fog rolling off flooded fields at dawn. A moorhen silhouetted on ice. A redshank landing mid-call in dew-soaked grass. None of this happens on a first visit. It happens on the 200th, or possibly the 2000th.
Depth of knowledge of a single place, its tides, its resident birds, its microclimates, produces images that a passing visitor simply can't get. It's the difference between photographing a location and understanding one."
