If there is one piece of kit that remains permanently in my camera bag it is the Hoodman HoodLoupe. Whether I am reviewing or composing the HoodLoupe makes life that much easier.
Whenever I can, I much prefer to look through the camera's viewfinder when composing as opposed to using Live View but there are instances such as when the I'm utilising the camera's tilting screen (working low to the ground, for example) that it simply isn't possible, or at least isn't without getting extremely wet and muddy or cricking my neck! Using the Loupe provides me with a means of scrutinising the frame without bright sunlight streaking across the screen and keeps the 'real world' hidden from my peripheral vision which could compromise my ability to carefully compose the scene before me. It's collapsible so slips into my jacket pocket and comes with a detachable neck strap. When in use, I hang it around my neck and to stop it swaying and generally getting in the way I just tuck it into my coat. By the way, I haven't been given this nor have I been asked to write a review. It's an item of equipment that those who have seen me using while holding workshops have been sufficiently impressed to purchase one themselves. At around £130 it's not exactly cheap but you'll wish you picked one up years ago once you start using one!
There's a number available for different sized screens. I use the 3.2 inch so wise to measure up before purchasing. Ebay has some for sale at present for a decent price and briefly looking online I see Speed Graphic are one of the only companies that sell them. They've been going for years and I have used them multiple times. A shop you can trust.
