Few places in the Northern Hemisphere showcase the dramatic shift from summer to autumn as vividly as Lapland. With its breathtaking autumn colours and the mesmerising northern lights, this spectacular region offers the perfect setting for an unforgettable photographic adventure.

Led by yours truly and my co-guide/driver, Dirk Van Uden, our autumn colours and northern lights of Lapland photography tour will take place 67° north in Muonio, northwest Finland, 135 miles within the Arctic Circle.

We will explore and photograph forests, fjords, lakes, rivers and rapids, all the while surrounded by the brilliant autumnal yellows of birch and aspen and the vibrant red leaves of northern bilberry. Finnish Lapland is a wild region of unending views and big skies where reindeer roam and the vibrant autumnal shades of “Ruska” set the landscape ablaze.

The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights are, understandably, on most people’s wish-list and on all my visits to this region at this time of the year, we have had fantastic showings!

Upon booking, receive a free copy of my eBook: Autumn in Finnish Lapland, which has a comprehensive guide on photographing the Northern Lights.

Throughout the duration of the tour, I will be close at hand to offer any help or advice you may require. A tutorial will also be given prior to our first evening of northern lights photography.

Co-guide/driver
Fluent in English, Finnish, and his native tongue, Dutch, our guide/driver will be good friend Dirk Van Uden. With his family, Dirk (short for Derek) has lived in Lapland for the last 20 years, working as a wilderness guide and carpenter. An extremely capable chap and expert driver, we have worked together for the last 15. Dirk also accompanies me on my Iceland, Norway, Faroes and Italy tours.

See the northern lights time-lapse created on the 2015 tour, here.

Getting there
We will first take a flight from London Heathrow to Helsinki and then another on the same day to Kittila. Our return journey will be from Tromso back to London Heathrow via Oslo.

Group size
As with all my workshops, the group size will be small ensuring plenty of 'personal space' in which to work and as much individual tuition as you would like or need. It also means that since we will all be travelling as one, it makes for an extremely friendly group dynamic.

Northern lights
Understanding that the northern lights are high on many’s wish-list we will do our utmost to put you in the best possible position to photograph them, and since we are so far north, providing there are clear skies you stand an excellent chance of seeing them, whatever the KP!

Image appraisal
Depending upon how much time (and energy!) we all have (this will be dependent on our northern lights activates) I shall endeavour to give at least one image appraisal - more likely on the penultimate day. As with all tours, the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day and less so on continual hands-on tuition which I give on my UK-based workshops. Be assured, however, that upon arriving at a location I will be giving suggestions on what and how to take the view and will, occasionally, move between you all checking on your progress and answering any questions you might have. I will, also, be giving a tutorial on northern lights photography to increase your chances of returning home with some truly memorable images.

Workshop info

Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!

Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.

Workshops

Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.

Tours

Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.

Creative Visions

Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
