Auroras, Fells and Fjords: Finnish Lapland and Norway in Autumn

As some third-party suppliers are unable to confirm rates this far in advance, the exact tour cost has yet to be finalised. However, understanding that many people like to plan and budget ahead - especially for a trip as exciting as this - I’ve provided an estimated cost based on 2026 rates. 

Final pricing will be confirmed once all supplier details are received (expected in autumn 2027). Rest assured, everything will be communicated clearly and transparently so you can book with confidence.

"NORTHERN LIGHT, AUTUMN FIRE"

The far north of Finland and Norway is a land of contrasts, where wilderness, dramatic landscapes, and seasonal light create scenes of extraordinary beauty. In Muonio, Finnish Lapland, the Arctic fells, old-growth forests, lakes, and rivers stretch into the horizon, painted in the fiery reds, oranges, and yellows of autumn “ruska.” Beneath the towering birch and pine canopies, northern bilberry and bunchberry add splashes of colour. Together, we will explore intimate forest scenes, capturing close-ups of woodland textures, or frame broad vistas of fells and mirrored lakes. 

Further north, Kilpisjärvi offers a wilder perspective, with rugged fells, glacial valleys, pristine lakes, and winding rivers beneath expansive Arctic skies. Here, we have the chance to capture grand panoramic vistas, reflections in calm lakes, and reindeer in their natural habitat. Nighttime brings the aurora borealis, often reflected in still waters, offering perfect conditions for capturing this incredible phenomenon.

Our journey continues to Senja, Norway, where the scenery transforms into a sub-Arctic coastal paradise. Referred to by the Norwegians as Norway's hidden gem, jagged mountains rise sharply from turquoise fjords, windswept beaches meet the open sea, and tiny fishing villages cling to the shoreline. Senja offers endless photographic opportunities: dramatic fjord panoramas, cliffside compositions, mirrored reflections, and intimate coastal details. As night falls, the northern lights dance above the sea and mountains, providing unforgettable imagery. Fireside meals along the way allow time to relax and soak in the beauty of these remote coastal landscapes.

NORTHERN LIGHTS
We understand that witnessing the Northern Lights is high on many people’s wish lists, and we’ll do everything possible to give you the best opportunity to photograph them. Given our far-northern location, you’ll have an excellent chance of seeing the aurora whenever the skies are clear - regardless of the KP index! Ideally, our visit would coincide with a new moon, providing completely dark skies; however, the timing of peak autumn colour ultimately determines our dates. During our stay in Finland, the moon will be full, gradually waning as we arrive in Norway. This can, in fact, enhance our photography, as the softly illuminated landscape often creates even more dramatic and powerful images - such as the one shown below.

DRIVER AND CO-GUIDE
On overseas tours that require a minibus, I prefer to leave the driving to someone else. My focus is on managing the day-to-day running of the trip and providing tuition - both of which demand plenty of energy without the added responsibility of ferrying everyone around! It’s also a much safer approach, particularly on Senja’s winding coastal roads.

I’m therefore delighted to announce that my good friend Dirk will once again be joining me on this tour, both as my assistant and as our driver. Based in Finland, where he works as a wilderness guide and professional driver, Dirk is not only highly skilled but also wonderful company. Those who have travelled with me before will already know how capable he is and how much fun he brings to the group. Rest assured, you’ll be in very safe hands!

SUNRISE SHOOTS
It may surprise you to learn that neither location is particularly suited to sunrise photography. This is especially true in Norway, where the mountainous terrain means the landscape receives little to no direct sunlight for some time after the sun has risen. Finland, by contrast, is relatively flat and heavily forested. However, our accommodation in both locations is beautifully situated - on the shores of a lake and a fjord - offering the potential for some wonderful early-morning opportunities. In general, our days will begin after breakfast and continue through until sunset. Then, following dinner, if the skies are clear, we’ll venture out once more in the hope of capturing the aurora borealis.
