Situated in northeast Poland, Bialowieza Forest is a huge area covering 1500 sq.km where, roughly, one third lies in Poland and two thirds in Belarus. Primaeval forests, rivers, wetlands and meadows make up this UNESCO World Heritage site. It is, quite simply, one of the most wildlife-rich sites in Europe.

Of all the birds and mammals that live within this wild region (59 mammal species, over 250 bird, 13 amphibian, 7 reptile and over 12,000 invertebrate species), the European bison or Wisent is the one that most come to see as it is the only place in Europe where such a significant wild, free-roaming herd can be seen. Following their extinction in Bialowieza in 1919, they were successfully reintroduced in 1929 and now, both on the Polish and Belarusian side, there are approximately 450 individuals in each country roaming freely in the forests and meadows which makes up almost 25% of the world’s total population and over 30% of free-living animals. These images were captured over a period of 5 winters.
