The Netherlands has been on my workshop wish list for many years. Not simply because of the tulips, although seeing millions of flowers stretching towards the horizon is certainly something every landscape photographer should experience at least once, but because nowhere else combines colour, light and landscape quite like Holland in spring.
For just a few weeks each year, the countryside is transformed into an extraordinary patchwork of vibrant reds, yellows, pinks and purples. Fields of flowering tulips are intersected by quiet canals, traditional windmills and tree-lined roads, creating a landscape that seems almost designed for photography.
Of course, photographing tulips is about much more than simply finding colourful fields. Light is everything, and whenever conditions look promising, we'll be out early, making the most of the soft dawn light. Evenings, of course, can be equally rewarding, with warm sidelight bringing depth and texture to the landscape, while passing showers often produce the dramatic skies that can elevate an image from good to memorable.

Although the tulip fields will naturally form the focus of the workshop, they are only part of the story. Holland's iconic windmills provide a timeless reminder of the country's rich history, and we'll spend time photographing several of the country's finest locations, always working with the light and weather rather than against them. From classic wide-angle landscapes to intimate details and more abstract compositions, there will be no shortage of photographic opportunities.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCES
I'm delighted to be leading this workshop alongside my good friend and long-time colleague, Dirk van Uden. Many of you will already know Dirk from my tours to other parts of Europe where he has been my co-guide and trusted driver for well over a decade. As a Dutch national, Dirk brings an invaluable local knowledge that takes us beyond the obvious locations and into the Holland that visitors rarely get to experience.
BOAT TRIP
On one of the days, we'll enjoy a leisurely boat trip through the canals of the beautiful university city of Leiden. Viewing the city from the water offers a completely different perspective and some wonderful photographic opportunities as we drift beneath historic bridges and past centuries-old buildings. We'll pause along the way for lunch at one of the city's many cafés before continuing our exploration of this charming and highly photogenic Dutch city.
A DUTCH DINNER
And, on another, Dirk has arranged a very special evening for us where his aunt will prepare a traditional Dutch dinner, served exclusively for our group in a glasshouse within a local garden centre after it has closed for the day. Rather than a single dish, we'll enjoy a selection of homemade Dutch specialities, giving us the opportunity to sample a wide variety of traditional flavours and recipes. It's a unique setting and a wonderful way to experience genuine Dutch hospitality - one of those memorable experiences that simply couldn't be arranged without Dirk's local knowledge and family connections.

RETURN VISITS TO KINDERDIJK
Set in the heart of Holland’s quiet waterways, this workshop includes several visits to Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its long line of historic windmills and its role in Dutch water management, and we’ll be there at sunrise (twice) and again at sunset, as one visit simply isn’t enough to become familiar with the location. Returning gives you time to understand the layout and the light so clearer decisions can be made which, in turn, will enable you to create stronger photographs.

A MEMORABLE MORNING...
Arriving at dawn in a chill mist, surrounded by the calls of warblers and confronted with these stunning windmills, I’m not exaggerating when I say it was one of my all‑time favourite photographic experiences, and that’s exactly why we’ll return at both sunrise and sunset — at least twice, possibly three times, because one visit simply isn’t enough to get familiar with the location or make the most of what it offers.

As with all of my workshops, we'll be travelling with a small group, allowing us to remain flexible and make the most of the prevailing conditions. We'll spend time exploring each location properly, discussing composition, light and technique, while always leaving plenty of space for you to develop your own ideas. Whether you simply want to enjoy photographing one of Europe's most colourful landscapes or are looking to take your photography to the next level, I'll be on hand throughout to help.

TULIP SEASON
While we will be visiting Holland during what is regarded as the peak tulip flowering season, as we know all too well, nature is never predictable and flowering times can shift from year to year depending on the weather, so although we can’t guarantee the exact timing or conditions, we’ll plan carefully to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to experience and photograph this spectacular landscape.
Whatever the flowers decide to do, Holland in spring has much more to offer, from iconic windmills and peaceful waterways to charming towns, beautiful light and the unique character of the Dutch countryside
FINALLY...
Thank you for considering this tour. Should you have any questions - no matter how small they may seem - please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'm always here to help and to ensure you enjoy a wonderful five days filled with experiences and inspiring photography.
Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!
Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.
Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.
Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.
Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
