On this North Kent Coast photography workshop, I've decided to pass your room booking onto you since you may wish to arrive the day before or stay on longer. We'll be staying at Premier Inn, Herne Bay which is not only extremely reasonable but, also, superbly located for the locations we hope to visit. You will be advised when to book. Breakfast and dinner will be taken at the hotel while lunch will be at a cafe. Please see under Accommodation for more details.
If you don't own a car but can get to Sittingbourne train station, I am more than happy to pick you up and drop you off once the workshop's finished. Due to space limitations, I can only accept one attendee.
Incorporating sweeping sandy beaches, cliffs, harbour 'arms' and sea tidal pools, the coastline of North Kent has long inspired writers, poets and artists from J.M.W Turner to Charles Dickens. Indeed, I have spent my entire photographic 'life' here and continue to draw inspiration from this very special region I call home!
Although not as familiar to many landscape photographers as, for example, the Devon, Cornish or Northumbrian coast, it is no less photogenic and, indeed, is one of the main attractions since you will be creating new compositions of seldom visited locations. No tripod holes here! Daylight is at a premium at this time of the year, and so to avoid spending too much time travelling between locations - thereby impacting on our photography time - we will be concentrating on those in the north east of the county from Birchington to Broadstairs. The North Kent Coast photography workshop dates have been specifically chosen in accordance with tidal patterns offering the very best opportunities, and with two sunrises and sunsets at our disposal, you are sure to return home with some wonderful photographs. I hope you can join me!

All the locations we visit are truly inspiring and offer oodles of potential and very different perspectives; from 'classic' compositions...

to long exposure...

ICM and impressionism.

WHAT TOPICS WILL BE COVERED?
On this North Kent Coast photography workshop, almost everything! Below are just a few aspects that will be discussed both on and off-location.
MY ETHOS
Whenever possible, I prefer to keep my groups small. This not only enables everyone to have plenty of space in which to photograph but also allows me to spend quality time with each attendee on a one-on-one basis. Although, at times, the 'art' of photography can be a serious business, I strongly believe the best way to advance others in their journey is to run such a workshop in a light-hearted, informal manner, never for one moment taking away the absolute thrill and enjoyment of being outdoors photographing the landscape with other like-minded individuals. Furthermore, I love to initiate group conversations about all things photography, so whether over coffee in a local cafe or while giving a post-processing tutorial, you can expect some lively (though always friendly) debating and discussion!
LEE FILTERS LOAN
Lee Filters has kindly donated a full complement of filters including ND and ND grads along with holders and adaptor rings. Should you already have such filters then great but if not you are most welcome to use those provided. Please inform me prior to the workshop should you wish to borrow any.
FINALLY...
Thank you very much indeed for considering this North Kent Coast photography workshop. Should you have any questions - however small or insignificant you think they might be - do drop me a line. I’m here to help and provide you with an inspirational workshop!
Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!
Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.
Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.
Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.
Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
