Prague in Black and White: By Night and by Day
If there was ever a location suited to monochrome, it would be the Golden City. During this Prague in black and white photography tour, I will lead you around Czechia's enchanting capital, both by day and by night, photographing many of its icons as well as lesser-known, more anonymous locations.

As with any city, there are many hotels in Prague to suit everyone's pocket, and although you would be very welcome to stay where you please, I would like to recommend the extremely comfortable 3* star Hotel Kampa Garden, which is located just 200 metres from the famous Charles Bridge. Having stayed here more times than I can remember, both with and without groups, I can assure you a very warm welcome and comfortable stay. They also serve an unbelievably good breakfast! Alternatives within the immediate vicinity are also available, and I would be very happy to give recommendations. Since we will be meeting at Charles Bridge at the start of the tour and each morning for sunrise, I would strongly recommend such a hotel since there would, then, be no need for you to worry about catching public transport to and from your hotel. However, should you wish to stay elsewhere, you would, of course, be very welcome to do so.
Fitness level: Moderate. By far the best way to experience Prague is on foot but we will, on occasion, use its highly efficient tram and, perhaps, metro system. So long as you don't have any serious mobility issues, can handle the occasional gradient and possess a pair of comfortable shoes, you will find this no problem at all. Plus, in order to keep up our energy levels, I do like to factor in the occasional coffee and cake stop!

Experience Level: Beginner upwards. Other than my Creative Visions workshops, all are aimed at the beginner who needs hands-on tuition to the more experienced who requires just to be guided to locations but who would also enjoy being in the company of other like-minded peo
Equipment needed: Keeping it light is the key when working in the city so just a couple of lenses from wide-angle to telephoto would be required, and although a polarising filter, ND and ND grads would be useful, they are by no means essential. However, for those early morning and night shoots, a lightweight tripod most certainly is! An extensive checklist will be sent to everyone several months before the tour.

Special dietary requirements/allergens
Prague is as developed as any other European country but it is relatively new to the concept of vegetarianism and especially veganism. They are big meat-eaters so although there will be a few vegetarian options, being 'flexitarian' would certainly make your life that much easier! If you're a strict vegan then I am afraid this tour will not be for you as vegan options are either rare or extremely limited. Also, should you have strict allergy requirements then I'm afraid the same applies.
Post-tour image review and editing tutorial
Following the tour and upon receiving three RAW files from each attendee, I will provide a recorded critique and Lightroom/Photoshop edit. There will be no need for you to be present during this process, so you need not set aside any time. This will not only give you valuable feedback and a chance to see others' work, but it will, I hope, also provide ideas for processing your own photos.

During this Prague in black and white photography tour, I will lead you around Czechia's enchanting capital, both by day and by night, photographing many of Prague's icons, including Charles Bridge, St Vitus Cathedral and Prague Castle, as well as lesser-known, more anonymous locations. Prague is stunning any time of the year but particularly so, I think, in autumn when visitor numbers are significantly lower, sunrise and sunset are neither too early nor too late and when there is a very real possibility of mist and fog, which, of course, is pure Manna from Heaven for the photographer!
Pre-tour Ideas, inspiration and editing tutorial
Something new, which I have been including more and more in my workshops...
Appreciating that, for some, such a location can be a little daunting, I thought it would be helpful if, a few weeks before the tour, everyone received a pre-recorded tutorial where I give my thoughts and suggestions on photographing Prague in black and white and the eventual post-processing. Such aspects will include long exposure, aspect ratios, filtration, B&W conversions, Masks and Graduated filters.
Known as The City of a Hundred Spires, Prague has, over the centuries, had what you might call a rather chequered history. From being ruled in the 1800s by the Habsburg Empire, Naxi Germany during WWII and eventually the Soviet Union until the Velvet Revolution of 1989, it was only as recently as 1993 that Czechoslovakia was peacefully divided into two independent states of the Czech and Slovak Republics. Throughout the ages, Prague has remained relatively unchanged, and its eclectic mix of Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles, cobbled lanes, synagogues, churches, a castle and a cathedral make this UNESCO World Heritage Site not only one of Europe's most beautiful cities but an absolute joy to wander around and photograph.

I would hazard a guess that there are few photographers (residing in the UK at least) more acquainted with Prague and Czech traditions than myself where, since 2002, I have visited this magical city on no fewer than 70 occasions photographing for my agents and my own library, as well as providing material for magazine articles. I think it's fair to say that I consider it to be my second home and that I still find it as inspiring and stimulating as I did on my first visit all those years ago.
With both wide-angle and telephoto lenses, we will look at capturing vistas, close-ups of details, and perhaps even venturing into the world of long and multiple exposures.
To me, Prague truly reveals its beauty at night and, especially so, in those quieter areas where you can relax and let your mind wander and create compositions of cobbled lanes and staircases under the illumination of lamplight.
With such a small group, you'll have plenty of room in which to work and will enable me to wander between you all, offering bespoke one-on-one tuition.

"Prague is a beautiful city - and three days is barely long enough to do more than take an overview with Bob giving us the benefit of his considerable knowledge of the city. In retrospect I should have taken an extra few days, as some other members of the group did, and stayed on to enjoy the ambience of the city - but even then, that wouldn’t have been enough time to really get to know the city. Bob was an excellent guide as usual - he knew the best places to take us to tickle our photographic fancies. After the dreadful Spring we had had at home, it was a delight to find everything in Prague in bloom as it should be - horse chestnuts in full spring regalia, spring flowers everywhere - a beautiful time to visit the parks and enjoy the magnificent views of the so colourful city.
We spent an evening taking night shots over the Charles Bridge - you could spend a week there, day and night, and still not exhaust the possibilities. We had one good day of sunshine, and the next was raining, but Bob turned that to our advantage by popping us into a covered arcade overlooking the streets in the centre of Prague for street photography in the rain, and we stayed bone dry. Such was the pace of the trip that most of the time, and even afterwards, I was not quite sure where I was, but that was more due to advancing age than the quality of the guidance by Bob. Another enjoyable trip, with excellent restaurants found by Bob, well worth the trip. I am left with an overwhelming sense of the colours of the city".

Workshop info
Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!
Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.
Workshops
Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.
Tours
Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.
Creative Visions
Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
