During this 2-night Snowdonia photography workshop, we will visit some of the region’s best-known locations as well as explore lesser-known ones, too, all set against a backdrop of valley mists and vibrant autumn colour.

Accommodation:

Located in Betws-y-Coed in the very heart of the national park, our base for the duration of the workshop will be the superbly situated family-run B&B - Church Hill House. Each will have a private en-suite room to themselves, complimentary toiletries, a hospitality tray, TV and WiFi.

Fitness level: Low to Moderate. Although some of the locations will require just a short stroll from the car, due to the very nature of this region, some will necessitate a round trip of around 1 1/2 miles which may include slopes, moorland, forest and near waterfalls and lakes. This will be at a gentle pace with stops when needed. Should you have any concerns regarding this before booking, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Sunrise / Sunset: 07.30 / 18.30

Experience Level: Beginner upwards.

Equipment needed: Just a couple of lenses such as a wide-angle and telephoto-zoom will suffice. A tripod will be necessary for those dawn/dusk shoots and although polarising, neutral density and neutral-density graduated filters would be useful, they are by no means essential. What is, however, is a clear understanding of exposure. A comprehensive checklist outlining clothing, camera gear and miscellaneous items will be sent out three months before the workshop.

Transport to the locations
The first two that book will travel in my car to the various locations and the last will carry the remaining passenger and follow me in theirs. To offset fuel (plus a little extra!), the person who drives will receive £45 off the workshop cost.

Post-tour critique and edit tutorial
Following the workshop and upon receiving two RAW files from everyone, a recorded critique and Lightroom edit tutorial will be provided, and since there'll be no need for you to be present during this process, you need not worry about setting any time aside. This will not only give you valuable feedback and a chance to see others' work but it will, I hope, also provide ideas for processing your own photos.

Mountains, lakes, abandoned slate quarries and waterfalls; amongst photographers in particular, the beguiling landscape of Snowdonia requires very little by way of an introduction. During this 2-night Snowdonia photography workshop, we will visit some of the region’s best-known locations as well as explore lesser-known ones, too, all set against a backdrop of valley mists and vibrant autumn colour.

The workshop begins at 1pm on the 12th and concludes after a sunrise shoot and breakfast on the 14th.

Throughout this Snowdonia photography workshop, a multitude of techniques and considerations will be discussed from filtration, composition, aspect ratios and black and white, to the thought process that lies behind the making of a meaningful photograph. Mid-October is the perfect time to visit when the landscape is ablaze and with the opportunity to capture 2 sunrises and 2 sunsets, you are sure to return home with some beautiful photographs. FAQ

Who is it suitable for?
Everyone. From the beginner who needs hands-on tuition to the more advanced practitioner who would like to simply be guided to locations but who would also enjoy being in the company of like-minded photographers.

Will there be much tuition?
As a workshop, you will receive as much as you would like or feel that you need. Although I will encourage you to explore and find your own compositions, it can often be overwhelming when you first enter a ‘foreign’ location and so upon arrival, I will spend a few moments to suggest where I consider to be the most productive areas for photography advising on such things as composition and exposure. We will then disperse (but, not too far) and immerse ourselves in the landscape, and after a short while, I will approach each of you to see how you are getting on. Through many years of running workshops, I have found this to be extremely effective since it allows everyone to grow and create their own style of images while at the same time feeling fully supported and encouraged.

Critiques & Tutorials?
Due to the limited duration of the workshop and relatively short days, no time has been set aside for critiques and tutorials. Instead, during our time out in the field, I will approach each in turn and through reviewing your photos on the back of your camera give constructive advice and suggestions. Also, following the workshop and upon receiving two RAW files from each, I will give a recorded critique and Lightroom edit tutorial.

What kind of weather should we expect?
Mid-October is a lovely time to visit Snowdonia, where the landscape displays its autumn finery. As is typical at this time of the year, the weather is unpredictable; we could have wind, rain and shine all in the space of an hour! Frosts are not uncommon as are valley mists. A truly evocative time.

Can I bring a non-photography partner along?
Absolutely! Although photography excursions are limited to participants only, they would be very welcome to join us later in the evening for dinner. There's lots to see in the immediate area and I would be very happy to recommend places of interest for them to visit.

Workshop info

Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!

Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.

Workshops

Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.

Tours

Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.

Creative Visions

Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
