Although, for the most part, this summer has been fairly warm and dry what it hasn't been is still and if ever there was a vital ingredient for early morning insect photography it's windless conditions. It's terribly frustrating for me (and those like me) that enjoy - yes enjoy - experiencing dawn on a still, dewy morning, even if it does mean getting up at silly o'clock! Honestly, I don't mind at all. The seasons are all too short to wish them away and autumn will be upon us before we know it so I embrace each season and try to be out as much as possible. And so last week, late in the afternoon, I popped to a local grassland site just 15 minutes away. It was breezy and overcast with hardly a butterfly to be seen except for this one, solitary marbled white clinging precariously to a grass head.
