Accommodation:

In both Killarney and Dingle, we will be staying in very comfortable hotels with all the amenities that you would come to expect including WiFi and in-room tea/coffee making facilities. Breakfast, of course, will be taken at the hotel and for lunch, we will either purchase a sandwich from a shop or take in a tea room. Dinner will either be at the hotel or somewhere local in town.  

Fitness level: Moderate. On this tour, agility takes precedence over stamina. Most of the walking will be on relatively flat ground, often photographing from quite near the car. In Dingle, there will be walks down slipways to access the beach and in Killarney rocky lakeside shores but nothing too taxing. While in Dingle, a steep walk taking in the region of 20 minutes may be necessary for an optional hill-top sunrise. This is not fair weather photography and there may be times when you will be standing around and shooting in the wind and rain. But, let me tell you, this is precisely the kind of conditions that lead to incredible images when, perhaps, the sun appears for just a few moments and illuminates the landscape. You’ve gotta be in it to win it!

Experience Level: Beginner upwards.
Equipment needed: Two camera bodies with one as a backup, and lenses ranging from wide-angle to telephoto. A tripod will be necessary for those dawn/dusk shoots and although polarising, neutral density and neutral-density graduated filters would be useful, they are by no means essential. What is, however, is a clear understanding of exposure. A comprehensive checklist outlining clothing, camera gear and miscellaneous items will be sent out 3 months before the tour.

Pre-tour live Q&A and post-tour critique and edit tutorial
Approximately one month before the tour commences, a live group video call (most likely Zoom) will be arranged. This will give everyone the perfect opportunity to become acquainted with each other and ask any questions regarding the trip. And then, following the tour and upon receiving three RAW files from each attendee, a recorded critique and Lightroom/Photoshop editing tutorial will be provided, and since there'll be no need for you to be present during this process, you need not worry about setting any time aside. This will not only give you valuable feedback and a chance to see others' work but it will, I hope, also provide ideas for processing your own photos.

Shaped by the wild Atlantic Ocean, southwest Ireland offers some of the most dramatic landscapes any photographer could wish for. With incredible views seemingly at every turn, this tour has been designed to take in two very contrasting areas of Kerry: the forests, lakes and mountains of Killarney National Park and the wild, rugged coastline of the Dingle Peninsula, once described by National Geographic Traveller as “the most beautiful place on earth”.

Our adventure begins with three nights in Dingle where impressive sea stacks, crashing waves, high cliffs and sweeping sandy bays await. I have to say, you will be hard-pushed to find a more impressive and stunningly beautiful coastline - anywhere! Our final 2 nights will be spent in Killarney. Autumn will still very much be in evidence in this wild, mountainous region providing an abundance of colourful opportunities in the forests, on the hills and surrounding the many waterfalls and streams.

STORMY SEAS AND TIDAL PATTERNS
You might be surprised to learn that I didn't simply pluck the dates out of thin air, and be wondering why I didn't decide to hold this tour during 'calmer' months. There are two very important reasons behind this. Firstly, during autumn through winter, there is the greatest chance of stormy seas resulting in some truly epic conditions in which to photograph and feel the raw power of nature. Secondly, it's critical when shooting along the coast to take the tide into account, and with that in mind, dates have been specifically chosen so that sunrise coincides with a receding tide thereby exposing the beach and revealing rock pools and reflections.

Having visited, explored and photographed this region on numerous occasions (both with groups and alone) you can be assured of visiting great locations at the best times of the day - regardless of the weather!

Workshop info

Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!

Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.

Workshops

Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.

Tours

Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.

Creative Visions

Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
