State of Mind

Wednesday 16th April 2025

Over the years, when making personal work, I've come to appreciate and recognise the importance of my mindset when photographing.

This is particularly the case when making images of 'quiet' landscapes, patterns and close-ups, when I find that a relaxed, almost zen-like state is required if I am to get the very best out of myself. I can't drive to a location listening to the news, and/or rock music, it just doesn't work for me. Instead, depending on the time I'm leaving home, I'll first pick up an inspirational photo book and while en route listen to either Classic FM or Radio 4 - whoever, at the time, is playing the calmest music. I think as you get older, you appreciate silence and solitude more. To just sit, observe and to be.
