On Sunday 23rd The Green Planet's latest episode aired showing a familiar location to those that have joined me on my Finland in Winter tours where trees, heavily laden with snow create weird and wonderful shapes on fell-tops across northern Finland. It truly is a sight to behold.
It prompted me to look back at those photographs I had made since my first visit to this fell in 2018. Here's a selection.
With temperatures often going well below -20, as you can imagine, it becomes a little more awkward to operate the camera. Tripod heads stiffen (as do cable releases) and removing your mittens to operate your equipment is no longer an option for it takes an age to warm them back up if you do!
The view across to Russia is quite breathtaking...
...and even more so if, while you are there, you are fortunate to witness a full moon rising.
I'll never forget my first visit. Ever since seeing Hannu Hautala's images in BBC Wildlife magazine some 30 years earlier, it had been a dream of mine to see and photograph tykky; a name given by the Finns to describe this phenomenon.
