TPE (as it is more commonly known) has become an indispensable app for many photographers, including myself. From saving locations and giving sunrise/sunset/moonrise and moonset times, TPE has an array of features that I frequently utilise when planning a shoot - sometimes weeks, even months in advance. One of the most useful is saving locations and right now I have dozens on the app but imagine if you lost your phone or for some reason, it just died. It happens - it did to me - and guess what? I didn't back them up! I eventually added them but it was just plain inconvenient. We back up our images (and, if you don't you should!) then surely it makes sense to back up our locations and, while I'm at it, that are on your SatNav, too. With regards to the latter, I have literally hundreds of saved photo-locations from across Europe but, for years, I have backed them up on two separate hard drives, just as I do my photographs.
Backing up your TPE locations on the app is very simple. Just open your Saved Locations and tap the arrow on the top right of the screen. This enables you to share the KML which is a standard data format for location sharing. Email it to yourself then save it. To test, while still on your device, open the KML within your email and, in the case of android, the option Open With will appear and one of the two options will be TPE (import). So, should your phone ever die or, in my case, get stolen, all you need to do with your new phone is to locate the KML and import your locations back into TPE. I hope this has been useful.
