I don't think I have ever claimed a product to be the best whether it be camera gear, software or whatever as it is all subjective but if there is one item of clothing that in all honesty, as far as I am concerned, is the best for wildlife and landscape photographers (or, come to that, anybody that participates in outdoor photography) and that is Fjallraven trousers. More specifically, Barents Pro and Vidda Pro.
Over the years, I've tried all manner of regular walking trousers purchased from the usual outfitters and although they're perfectly OK for hill walking they just don't cut the mustard for outdoor photographers. I need something that blends in with the environment, is durable, wind and water resistant and has substantial pockets, and these two tick all the boxes and more besides. I've been wearing them on a pretty much daily basis for the last four years and the winter-lined extra warm version for the last two and aside from those features mentioned one of the things I absolutely love about them is the removable foam knee pads. We spend a great deal of time kneeling on rough ground and if you're anything like me you'll always find a hidden thistle in the grass, so when you can confidently kneel without injury it really is a blessing.
There's no beating around the bush here, Fjallraven is the best. No question. Scandinavians know how to make outdoor clothing that works and lasts. For good reason, too. They're outdoor enthusiasts and when your environment consists of wild, mountainous, forested back-country you need clothing that will keep you going and not rip or snag when it comes into contact with a rock or thorn. At around £130 they are not exactly cheap nor, in my opinion for a quality product, especially expensive either. You get what you pay for.
