Snowdonia and Anglesey

Waiting list
Date: Mon 7th Oct - Sat 12th Oct 2024
Time: 06:00 - 10:00
Price: £1,595.00
Deposit: £160.00
Group size: 3
Tutor / Guide: Robert Canis
Location: Snowdonia and Anglesey, Wales.
Duration: 5 nights
Cost includes: 5 nights en-suite B&B accommodation. No single-supplement necessary and transport to locations.
Cost excludes: Transport to and from Wales and meals not mentioned.
Accommodation:

Wishing to spend as little time as possible while moving between locations (particularly for sunrise), I have decided to base us at two locations. Located in Betws-y-Coed in the very heart of the national park, our accommodation for the first 3 nights will be the superbly situated family-run B&B - Church Hill House, and for the final 2 while on Anglesey, The Anglesey Arms. Both known for high levels of comfort and hospitality, each attendee will have a private en-suite double room to themselves (no single supplement necessary) with a hospitality tray, TV and WiFi. With regards to meals; breakfast will, of course, be at the B&B while lunch will either be picked up from a nearby store or taken at a tea room. Dinner will be at the hotel or in town.

Fitness level: Moderate. Although some of the locations will require just a short stroll from the car, due to the very nature of this region, (Snowdonia in particular), some will necessitate a round trip of upwards of 2 miles which may include hills, moorland, forest, rocky coastline and paths. Therefore, should you have knee, hip or age-related reduced mobility then I am afraid this tour is not for you. Please contact me in advance to discuss this should you be unsure.
Sunrise / Sunset: 07.30 / 18.30
Experience Level: Beginner upwards.
Equipment needed: Aside from the obvious, a couple of lenses from wide-angle to telephoto will be sufficient. A tripod is essential for those dawn/dusk shoots, and polarising, graduated and ND filters would be useful they are by no means absolutely necessary. What is, however, is a clear understanding of exposure. A comprehensive checklist outlining equipment and meet-up details will be sent out two months prior.
Additional info:

Post-tour critique and edit tutorial
Following the workshop and upon receiving three RAW files from everyone, a recorded critique and Lightroom/Photoshop editing tutorial will be provided, and since there'll be no need for you to be present during this process, you need not worry about setting any time aside. This will not only give you valuable feedback and a chance to see others' work but it will, I hope, also provide ideas for processing your own photos.

Mountains, lakes, slate quarries, castles, waterfalls and a rugged coastline, amongst photographers in particular, Snowdonia and Anglesey require very little by way of an introduction and during this 6 day workshop, we will visit some of the region’s most well known locations including Devil’s Kitchen and Penmon Point as well as explore lesser-known ones, too. As well as capturing awe-inspiring mountain and coastal vistas, you will be encouraged to seek out details – both large and small - that most would either not recognise its potential or would ordinarily pass by. A multitude of techniques and considerations will be discussed from filtration, composition, aspect ratios and black and white, to the thought process that lies behind the making of a meaningful photograph. With still relatively mild temperatures, early October is a lovely time to visit Snowdonia and Anglesey when conditions are quite stable and when the landscape is showing clear signs of autumn. While in Snowdonia, we will endeavour to capture 3 sunrises and 2 sunsets, and on Anglesey 2 sunrises and sunsets. With potentially warm days and cool nights, there is the distinct possibility of mist in the valleys and on the lakes which could make for some beautiful photos.

TIMING
With coastal photography, timing is of utmost importance. Coincide sunrise with high tide, for example, and you won't have a beach to work on. With this in mind, dates have been specifically chosen so that we can access and photograph the remarkable Llanddwyn Island on Anglesey through to sunset without fear of getting cut off!

Workshop info

Thank you for dropping by and considering attending a workshop. I love nothing more than to pass on to others the knowledge I have gained over the last 30 years as a professional photographer and 15 as a workshop and tour leader. My group sizes are always small ensuring a fun and friendly group dynamic, lots of 'personal space' in which to photograph without too much fear of others getting in your way and as much tuition as you would like or feel that you need. I hope you can join me!

Although under the 'umbrella' of Workshops, please note there is a difference between the three types that I offer. To avoid any confusion, please see below.

Workshops

Those taking place in the UK are classed as Workshops where learning is the primary aim, and in the case of those which are multi-day residential, very often include image critique and post-processing sessions.

Tours

Overseas trips are classed as Tours where the logistics are all taken care of and where the emphasis is on getting you to great locations at the best time of the day. Since these may include hide photography and working in cold, windy conditions where one-on-one tuition isn't practical, these are less hands-on. However, prior to the hide session or upon arriving at a location, I will give advice and suggestions on composition, lens selection and exposure.

Creative Visions

Creative Visions is a new concept that I have designed to specifically nurture your artistic growth. They can take place in either the UK or abroad combining both workshop and tour principles. There will be critique and post-processing tutorials and, most importantly, you will be encouraged to go beyond the record and representational and instead produce more intimate creative interpretations.
